Tisna Sanjaya

Tisna was born in 1959 and grew up in Bandung. He received a BA in 1994, and an MA in 1998, from the Freikunst HBK in Braunschweig, Germany. His works are dense with images from traditional Sundanese theater and western art and portray the tensions of contemporary socio-political Indonesia. Currently teaching at the Bandung Institute of Technology, Tisna is a central figure in the Bandungas well as in Indonesian’s art scene.
Recent solo exhibitions include: Katakan Meskipun Pahit dan Berdoalah (Tell It, Even If It Hurts), University of Hamburg, Germany (1998); Bicara-Dialogue-Zaghata: Identity & Anonymity, Caldwell House Gallery, Singapore (1998); Kucing Hitam, Teater Utan Kayu, Jakarta, Indonesia (1998); Suppose We Are in Sarajevo, Gallery Lontar, Jakarta, Indonesia (1998). Recent group exhibitions include: Art of The Hurt, Bandung, Indonesia (1998); Monument of Thinking with the Knee, Hall of the House of Representatives, West Java Province, Indonesia (1998); Dialogue: Tisna Sanjaya, Lee Wan, Aung Mynt, Lim Soo Nge, Yei Mynt, Art-2, Singapore (1998); Urbanisation, Soemardja Gallery, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia (1998). His work is in the public collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, Japan; the Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan, among others.
